Overview:

CICCD is the abbreviation of the Confucius Institute at Community College of Denver. As the only Confucius Institute in the world established by a community college, it’s core value and mission were to promote Chinese culture, language studies, testing, scholarships, and to assist related affairs in American universities.

As a director assistant in this department, I was the only one being able to use the Adobe programs to create design projects at the time. Although most of my responsibilities were clerical (such as data recording/ management, language tutoring, PPT production, events planning, etc.). When I first started doing these creative projects, I was arranged to help the designer colleagues in the school marketing department translating Chinese, and produce the relevant language versions. As I continued to grow, my former supervisor encouraged me to complete more creative projects on myself. I really appreciate my former supervisor for giving me many opportunities to produce diverse creative projects, including course/event posters, performance programs, videos, social media/Ad banners, brochures, etc.

Approach:

Because this department was a subordinate institution of public universities, and had cooperative partnership with Chinese universities, it was a representative of multiculturalism. And the institute already has branded guideline, my designs must meet the brand requirements, including the use of Logo and colors. Another point was the events and courses needed to be presented as different topics every year, so I made the production of these projects according to the background, goals, and contents of events or courses every year.

Although the contents of each year were different, the audience for these projects was basically the same: college students, professors/teachers, middle school students,  elementary school students, and parents or others. In addition to the content mentioned above, the core of my design would be mostly conceived around the main audience—students.

In the usual activities of the department, my responsibilities also included photography, so I have created and managed a lot of activity materials to enrich the composition of these projects. Also because my supervisor wanted to use our event photos to reflect reality, my photographic materials played a big role in attracting the audience’s attention. And because this is a multicultural institution, the elements of Chinese culture are generally my first consideration.
